1-minute answer
ChromeOS uses the Unicode input method: hold Ctrl+Shift+U, type the hex code, then press Enter or Space.
01 Step by step, per platform
A real, followable procedure for every platform — not a thin restatement of the shortcut.
Unicode input
- Hold Ctrl+Shift+U — an underlined "u" appears.
- Type the character's hex code, e.g. 00e9.
- Press Enter or Space to confirm — the character replaces the code.
Accented letters directly
- Hold a vowel key down — a popup shows accented variants, same as on a phone keyboard.
02 FAQ
Does Ctrl+Shift+U work in every Chromebook app?
It works system-wide in ChromeOS text fields, including Android apps running on the device. A few web apps that intercept keyboard events may not receive it.
