What is the difference between Alt+NNNN and Alt+X?
Alt+NNNN is the legacy Windows method and only exists for about 150 Windows-1252 characters. Alt+X is universal: type the hex code point, then press Alt+X in Word to convert it. This tool shows whichever applies to each character.
Do Alt codes work on a Mac?
No, Macs use Option-key shortcuts and the Character Viewer instead. Search here to find a character, then open its page for the exact Mac shortcut, or just copy it directly.
