Character Map Windows Guide

Updated 17 Aug 2026 · by SKK · 2 platforms covered
1-minute answer

Character Map is a built-in Windows utility for finding and copying any character by browsing, searching by name, or filtering by font.

01 Step by step, per platform

A real, followable procedure for every platform — not a thin restatement of the shortcut.

Open it

  1. Press Win+R, type charmap, press Enter.
  2. Or search "Character Map" in the Start menu.

Find a character

  1. Browse the grid, or check "Advanced view" to search by character name or Unicode code point.
  2. Select a character, click Select, then Copy.
  3. Paste it wherever you need it.

02 FAQ

Can Character Map show me a character's Alt code?

It shows the Unicode code point ("U+00E9"), not a Windows Alt code — those are two different numbering systems. Use the hex-then-Alt+X method in Word to convert the Unicode value directly.
