How To Insert Symbols In Word

Updated 17 Aug 2026 · by SKK · 3 platforms covered
1-minute answer

Word has three ways to insert a symbol: the Symbol dialog (Insert → Symbol), typing the hex code then Alt+X, or a classic Alt code.

01 Step by step, per platform

A real, followable procedure for every platform — not a thin restatement of the shortcut.

Insert \xe2\x86\x92 Symbol

  1. Go to Insert → Symbol → More Symbols.
  2. Browse or search by character name, or enter its code point.
  3. Double-click to insert; frequently used symbols appear in the recent list.

Hex code + Alt+X

  1. Type the character's hex code point, e.g. 2260.
  2. Immediately press Alt+X — Word converts it to the character (≠).

Classic Alt code

  1. Hold Alt, type the decimal code on the numpad, e.g. 0169 for ©.

02 FAQ

Why did Alt+X convert the wrong thing?

Alt+X converts whatever hex digits immediately precede the cursor. If there's a stray character or space in between, select just the hex code first.
