An accented C comes in fourteen common forms. The everyday one is Ç ç, the C-cedilla used in French, Portuguese, Catalan and Turkish. Beyond it: acute Ć ć (Polish, Croatian), caron Č č (Czech, Slovene, Slovak), circumflex Ĉ ĉ, dot-above Ċ ċ, plus the stroke and hook variants. Tap any character below to copy it, or use the shortcuts underneath.
01 Step by step, per platform
A real, followable procedure for every platform, not a thin restatement of the shortcut.
On Windows
- For Ç or ç, hold Alt and type 0199 (capital) or 0231 (lowercase) on the numeric keypad, then release, these two have classic Windows Alt codes.
- For any other accented C (Ć, Č, Ĉ, Ċ…), press Win + . to open the emoji & symbol panel, switch to the Symbols tab and search the accent name.
- In older apps, run Character Map: press Win + R, type charmap, find the letter, then Copy and paste it.
On Mac
- For ç press Option + C; for the capital Ç press Option + Shift + C. This works on the standard U.S. layout.
- For the acute, caron and other forms, open the Character Viewer with Control + Command + Space and search the name, for example c with caron.
- To type them directly, add the ABC – Extended input source in Keyboard settings and use its accent dead keys before pressing C.
Microsoft Word & Google Docs
- In Word, type the four-character code then press Alt + X, for example 0106 then Alt+X turns into Ć.
- Or use Insert → Symbol → More Symbols and pick the accented C from the Latin subset.
- In Google Docs, use Insert → Special characters and search latin c, or draw the accent in the sketch box.
On phones (iOS & Android)
- On the on-screen keyboard, press and hold the C key. A small popup of accented options appears, slide to ç, ć or č and release.
- For a form that is not on the long-press popup, copy it from the keys above and paste it where you need it.

04 Troubleshooting & confusables
| Looks like it | But it's actually | When to use |
|---|---|---|
| Ç / ç | C with cedilla | French, Portuguese, Catalan and Turkish. The little hook softens C to an /s/ sound, as in façade and garçon. |
| Ć / ć | C with acute | Polish and Croatian. A soft, sharp C sound. It is a different letter from Č, do not swap the acute for the caron. |
| Č / č | C with caron (háček) | Czech, Slovene, Croatian and Slovak. The little v above marks the "ch" sound in "chair". |
05 FAQ
How do I type Ç on a keyboard?
On Windows, hold Alt and type 0199 for capital Ç or 0231 for lowercase ç on the numeric keypad. On a Mac, press Option+Shift+C for Ç or Option+C for ç. On a phone, press and hold the C key and choose ç from the popup.
What is the difference between Ć and Č?
Ć is C with an acute accent, used in Polish and Croatian. Č is C with a caron, the small v, used in Czech, Slovene, Croatian and Slovak. They are separate letters with different sounds, so they are not interchangeable.
What is the C with a tail called?
That tail is a cedilla and the letter is Ç, the "C-cedilla". It appears in French words like façade and garçon, in Portuguese, and in Turkish, and it marks a soft /s/ sound.
Is there an Alt code for every accented C?
No. Only Ç and ç have classic Windows Alt codes (0199 and 0231). The others, Ć, Č, Ĉ, Ċ, have no Alt+0 code; in Microsoft Word type the hex code such as 0106 and press Alt+X, or copy the character from the table above.
How do I type an accented C on a Mac without changing settings?
Open the Character Viewer with Control+Command+Space, search the name such as "c with caron", and double-click to insert it. This needs no layout change and works in any app.
