01 Step by step, per platform

A real, followable procedure for every platform, not a thin restatement of the shortcut.

On Windows

  1. The common Latin-1 forms have direct Alt codes: é = Alt 0233, ê = Alt 0234, ë = Alt 0235, è = Alt 0232. Hold Alt, type the number on the numeric keypad, then release.
  2. For any other form, press Win + . to open the emoji & symbol panel, switch to the Symbols tab and search the accent name.
  3. Or type the code from the table below into Microsoft Word and press Alt + X, for example 0114 then Alt+X gives Ĕ.

On Mac

  1. Press Option+E, then E to get é.
  2. Press Option+`, then E to get è.
  3. Press Option+I, then E to get ê.
  4. Press Option+U, then E to get ë.
  5. For the rest, open the Character Viewer with Control + Command + Space and search the accent name.

Microsoft Word & Google Docs

  1. In Word, type the four-character code then press Alt + X, for example 0114 then Alt+X becomes Ĕ.
  2. Or use Insert → Symbol → More Symbols and pick the letter from the Latin subset.
  3. In Google Docs, use Insert → Special characters and search latin e, or draw the accent in the sketch box.

On phones (iOS & Android)

  1. On the on-screen keyboard, press and hold the E key. A popup of accented options appears, such as é ê ë è ĕ, slide to the one you want and release.
  2. For a form that is not on the popup, copy it from the keys above and paste it where you need it.

é vs è Acute vs grave In French, é (acute) closes the vowel as in "café", while è (grave) opens it as in "père". They are not interchangeable, the accent direction changes the sound.
ê vs ë Circumflex vs diaeresis ê marks a historical or lengthened vowel (French "être"); ë tells you to pronounce the E separately (French "Noël", Albanian, Dutch).
ě vs ę Caron vs ogonek ě (Czech) softens the preceding consonant; ę (Polish, Lithuanian) is a nasal vowel with a little tail. Different marks, different languages.

How do I type é on a keyboard?

On Windows hold Alt and type 0233 for é or 0201 for É on the numeric keypad. On a Mac press Option+E then E. On a phone, press and hold the E key and choose é from the popup.

What is the difference between é and è?

Both are French. é has an acute accent (rising, right-leaning) and a closed sound as in "été"; è has a grave accent (left-leaning) and an open sound as in "mère". Choosing the wrong one changes the word.

How do I type ê and ë?

For the circumflex ê, press Option+I then E on a Mac, or type 0234 with Alt on Windows. For the diaeresis ë, press Option+U then E, or type 0235. On phones, both sit under a long-press of the E key.

Which languages use ę?

The ogonek-E (ę) is a nasal vowel in Polish (as in "ręka") and also appears in Lithuanian. It has no Windows Alt code, use Word's Alt+X with 0119, or copy it from the table above.

Is there an Alt code for every accented E?

Only the Latin-1 forms è é ê ë (and their capitals) have classic Alt+0 codes. Rarer forms such as ě, ę, ē, ė or ĕ do not; type the code from the table above into Microsoft Word and press Alt+X.
