How to Type the Checkmark (✓)

1-minute answer

The check mark ✓ is U+2713. It marks something as done, correct or included. There is no key for it, so tap the key above to copy it, or press Win+. on Windows and search "check". It renders as plain text and takes the colour of the surrounding words, unlike the green ✅ emoji.

05 FAQ

What is the Unicode code point for the check mark?

It is U+2713, decimal 10003. In HTML you can write ✓. The heavier variant is U+2714.

Why does my check mark turn into a green emoji?

Something has appended the variation selector U+FE0F, which requests the colour emoji form, or you copied U+2705 rather than U+2713. Copy the plain character to keep it as monochrome text.

Is this the same as the Wingdings tick?

No. The Wingdings tick is an ordinary letter displayed with a symbol font, so it turns back into a letter the moment the font changes. U+2713 is a real character and survives anywhere.

How does a screen reader announce it?

Most read it as "check mark". That is fine in a list, but a tick used alone to mean yes carries no meaning when heard, so pair it with a word in tables and forms.

How do I put a check mark in Excel or Word?

In Word, type 2713 and press Alt+X. In Excel, use Insert then Symbol and search for it, or paste the character from here. Both accept the plain Unicode character in a normal cell or paragraph.
