1-minute answer

P is another letter that natural languages leave unaccented. The only marked forms are P with hook, Ƥ and ƥ, which belong to the International Phonetic Alphabet and a few African orthographies. Tap any character below to copy it.

01 Step by step, per platform

A real, followable procedure for every platform, not a thin restatement of the shortcut.

  1. For any other form, press Win + . to open the emoji & symbol panel, switch to the Symbols tab and search the accent name.
  2. Or type the code from the table below into Microsoft Word and press Alt + X, for example 01A4 then Alt+X gives Ƥ.

On Mac

  1. Open the Character Viewer with Control + Command + Space and search the accent name, for example the letter followed by the accent.
  2. To type these often, add the ABC – Extended input source in Keyboard settings and use its accent dead keys before the letter.

Microsoft Word & Google Docs

  1. In Word, type the four-character code then press Alt + X, for example 01A4 then Alt+X becomes Ƥ.
  2. Or use Insert → Symbol → More Symbols and pick the letter from the Latin subset.
  3. In Google Docs, use Insert → Special characters and search latin p, or draw the accent in the sketch box.

On phones (iOS & Android)

  1. Most phone keyboards do not offer an accent popup for P, since these forms are rare. Copy the one you need from the keys above and paste it where you are typing.
  2. On iOS you can also add a third-party keyboard, or use the built-in dictation and text-replacement features to insert a saved character.

05 FAQ

Does the letter P take an accent?

Not in English or the major European languages. The only marked forms are Ƥ and ƥ (P with hook), used in phonetic notation and some West African orthographies.

What is Ƥ (P with a hook)?

Ƥ represents an implosive p sound, /ɓ̥/, in the International Phonetic Alphabet and in a handful of African languages. Most writers will never need it.

How do I type ƥ or Ƥ?

These have no Windows Alt code. In Microsoft Word type the hex code from the table above (for example 01A5) and press Alt+X, or copy the character straight from the keys on this page.

Where would I see an accented P?

Mainly in linguistics and IPA transcriptions, and in printed material for certain African languages. Everyday European text keeps P plain.

Is there a Mac shortcut for Ƥ?

There is no dead-key shortcut. Open the Character Viewer with Control+Command+Space, search "p with hook", and double-click to insert it, or copy it from this page.
