1-minute answer

U carries a wide range: acute ú, grave ù, circumflex û, diaeresis ü, tilde ũ, macron ū, the Czech ring ů, the Hungarian double-acute ű, ogonek ų and the Vietnamese horn ư. German, French, Hungarian, Czech, Lithuanian and Vietnamese all use them. Tap any character below to copy it.

01 Step by step, per platform

A real, followable procedure for every platform, not a thin restatement of the shortcut.

On Windows

  1. The common Latin-1 forms have direct Alt codes: ú = Alt 0250, û = Alt 0251, ü = Alt 0252, ù = Alt 0249. Hold Alt, type the number on the numeric keypad, then release.
  2. For any other form, press Win + . to open the emoji & symbol panel, switch to the Symbols tab and search the accent name.
  3. Or type the code from the table below into Microsoft Word and press Alt + X, for example 016C then Alt+X gives Ŭ.

On Mac

  1. Press Option+E, then U to get ú.
  2. Press Option+`, then U to get ù.
  3. Press Option+I, then U to get û.
  4. Press Option+U, then U to get ü.
  5. For the rest, open the Character Viewer with Control + Command + Space and search the accent name.

Microsoft Word & Google Docs

  1. In Word, type the four-character code then press Alt + X, for example 016C then Alt+X becomes Ŭ.
  2. Or use Insert → Symbol → More Symbols and pick the letter from the Latin subset.
  3. In Google Docs, use Insert → Special characters and search latin u, or draw the accent in the sketch box.

On phones (iOS & Android)

  1. On the on-screen keyboard, press and hold the U key. A popup of accented options appears, such as ú û ü ù ŭ, slide to the one you want and release.
  2. For a form that is not on the popup, copy it from the keys above and paste it where you need it.

04 Troubleshooting & confusables

Looks like itBut it's actuallyWhen to use
ü vs u U-diaeresis vs plain u ü (German, Turkish, Hungarian) is a rounded front vowel and, in German, a full letter. It is not an optional decoration on u.
ů vs ü Ring vs diaeresis ů (Czech) has a small ring above and marks a long "u"; ü has two dots. Different marks, different languages, do not swap them.
ű vs ü Double acute vs diaeresis Hungarian pairs them: ü is short, ű (two acute strokes) is long. The marks and the vowel lengths differ.

05 FAQ

How do I type ü on a keyboard?

On Windows hold Alt and type 0252 for ü or 0220 for Ü on the numeric keypad. On a Mac press Option+U then U. On a phone, press and hold the U key and choose ü.

What is the difference between ü and ù?

ü has two dots (diaeresis) and appears in German, Turkish and Hungarian; ù has a grave accent and appears in French and Italian. Different marks, different sounds and languages.

How do I type the Czech ů?

ů (U with ring) has no Alt code. Type 016F in Microsoft Word and press Alt+X, or use the Czech keyboard layout. It marks a long "u" as in "dům".

What is the Hungarian ű?

ű is U with a double acute, the long counterpart of ü in Hungarian (as in "tű"). Type 0171 in Word and press Alt+X, or copy it from the keys above.

Is there an Alt code for every accented U?

Only ù ú û ü (and capitals) have Latin-1 Alt codes. Rarer forms such as ū, ů, ű, ų or ư do not; use Word's Alt+X with the code from the table above.
